For example fed. gos through circuit court, than appelate courts, than supreme. what does state go through? What order does federal and state cases go through?
Similar path some with different names. What order does federal and state cases go through?
Court names are specific to each jurisdiction. In NY, we have county courts and also district courts.
In the federal system, the Circuit court is an appeals court - it's the Circuit Court of Appeals. Cases in the fed begin in the District Courts (different states have different numbers of districts - pretty sure that Nev. %26amp; RI have one each; in NY, there are 4), and then are appealed to the Circuit Courts.
In NY, the highest court is actually several different courts - there are the Supreme Courts for each county; cases are appealed from there to the Supreme Court Appellate Divisions (there is one for each of the 4 geographic departments in the state) and then to the ';highest'; court being the ';Court of Appeals';.
This will be different in different states. By the way, federal is District Court, then Circuit Court (which is the same thing as Appellate Court), then the Supreme Court.
Pretty much the same thing in Illinois it is the trial/circuit court, appellate and then Illinois supreme court
